ABOUT SYLVIA RIVERA:
Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) was an activist and organizer who fought for the rights of low-income, trans and gender non- conforming people, sex workers, and people of color. Sylvia, a trans woman of Puerto Rican and Venezuelan descent, was raised on the streets of NYC and worked as an advocate for homeless queer and trans youth throughout her life. In 1969, 17 year old Sylvia participated in the Stonewall Riots, now considered the catalyst of the Gay Liberation Movement. In 1970 Sylvia and Marsha P. Johnson founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). STAR worked to feed and house their community and participated in demonstrations for queer and trans rights. Sylvia was also active with the Young Lords and the Black Panthers. Gay Liberation was conservative and Sylvia was continually pushed out of "LGBT" spaces. Throughout her life Sylvia remained critical of assimilation and mainstream gay rights groups that excluded low-income trans people.
